Things that are familiar give you a degree of comfort so trading equities (shares) and big companies is not a false start. If starting out, steer clear of small caps and AIM shares which are highly speculative and importantly develop your emotion, system and strategy while doing this. Sticking to FTSE 250 companies is sound. Make sure you are not emotionally distressed or tired when trading. I have opened a trading account but how do I start picking which stocks to trade?

Technical Analysis: Why it Works and its Limitations

Technical Analysis: Why it Works and its Limitations. Francis Hunt, a technical analysis trader and coach comments. If you've found this video useful, please click the like button and share it with your friends and remember to SUBSCRIBE to remain up-to-date! Do you really believe that technical analysis can help traders? In what ways? How can a chart help forecast future prices if they are based on the past? Do you base your trading solely on technical or do you also use fundamental analysis? Can technical analysis by itself be the mainstay of an investment strategy? We know that in practice what happens in reality is that one piece of real news can blow up months of small technical gains. Please comment. Technical analysis works for me but I've selected the elements that work for me and there are limitations. There are a number of concepts that I feel don't work and which I avoid. Traders are taught indicators and moving averages; many of which are lagging the price action. I think there is too much fascination on indicators and too many traders get caught up trying to seek price tops or bottoms. I think price action is often de-emphasised. I do value volume and things like bollinger bands. I also use chart patterns as these capture people's footprints and DNA of a crowd's response to certain impulses.

Short-Term versus Long-Term Trading

Short-Term versus Long-Term Trading. Francis Hunt a technical analysis trader and coach comments. If you've found this video useful, please click the like button and share it with your friends and remember to SUBSCRIBE to remain up-to-date! I think for learning people should start with a demo account or use very small stakes to trade on short-term time frames as that helps you develop the trading mindset. After a while you should look to trade over longer time frames. Several traders use ATR as part of their sell strategy. My question is how in practice do you actually do it? All average true range measures is how much a price has varied during a particular time frame session. As such it is measuring the impulsiveness or the volatility more accurately of a market's move. What other indicators have people found to have the best outcome when used with ATR. For example would you only sell if ATR broken AND the share price is below certain moving average or MACD cross etc?

Preparing to Profit from the next Stock Market Crash

05:16
What are the best things to invest in if you think the market will crash? Francis Hunt a technical analysis trader and coach comments. In the long run this becomes a fundamental discussion; we are currently in a fantasy kind business environment where no real interest is being paid; the liquidity this is creating is not finding its way to small businesses. In the long run we will likely have a black swan event; a market reset correction if one may but it will be unexpected. Keep cash alternatives in intrinsic physical metals; do not be highly leveraged in property. I think anyone that resets an imbalance is beneficial in the long run. How can I get start trading in the stock market?

If you've found this video useful, please click the like button and share it with your friends and remember to SUBSCRIBE to remain up-to-date! Why should investors consider trading at this point in time? I think everyone should have a savings and investment plan and that's different to trading; I think leverage and trading is something that you have earn the right to. For someone new I would ask him if he's got the patience and to demonstrate that he's not in it to get rich fast. Trading requires patience and if you lose 50% of your capital; the likelihood of you making back 100% back is low so people tend to increase stake sizes.

Developing a Profitable and Winning Trading System

05:00
How do you go about formulating a strategy with a positive expectancy? Charlie Burton, trader and educator comments. Winning more than you lose. The way that I personally formulate strategies is to spot at recurring themes and then start testing - you take the basic theme - say a breakout at a certain level - if I use a stop loss here and a target here - how often would I be right. And I would use different levels to identify better strategies. Most traders focus their efforts on finding the best trading system but this will not by itself make you money. Please comment. The problems with most traders is mindset - they tend to hesitate when taking decisions especially when following systems.

Risk management counts for a lot in trading - even if you have the best system in the world, if your risk management sucks you will end blowing up your account. 3) Filter out the noise! If you want to follow somebody, follow somebody...but get rid of the excess noise. 4) Stick to one trading method or trading strategy. 5) Be in it for the long term. Bollinger Bands and Stochastic Reversal Trading Strategy 💡

09:04
Bollinger Bands and Stochastic Reversal Trading Strategy. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/bollinger-bands.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE This is a nice strategy. It was claimed to be a swing trading strategy but to me it has more similarities to day trading. The idea of the strategy is to utilise Bollinger Bands and Stochastics. Criteria as follows: 1) The price must be touching or above the upper Bollinger Band. 2) Stochastics must be in an overbought condition. 3) You must have a reversal candle at that point. You could tailor this strategy according to what you expect the price to do in particular the stakes (risk) you want to take and stop placements. The general idea of this trade is that you're looking for a reversal; you've got the overbought condition, flush, exhaustion and the candlestick pattern to get in. You could end up with a gem of a trade that gets you in on Day 1 or Day 2 of a big trend reversal.

What Do Hedge Funds Think of Technical Analysis?

06:02
What do hedge funds think of technical analysis? Corvin Codirla, ex-hedge fund manager and independent traders comments. Do you need to be good at maths to make money trading? Why aren't economists wealthy / successful investors? Or are they? Some of them love it and some of them hate it. It also depends what you mean by technical analysis. If technical analysis means optically looking at charts and looking for patterns like head and shoulders..etc it becomes very difficult to test. If something cannot be written down in a set of rules, then it is not useful. Others will argue that technical analysis is more of an art than a science. Knowing maths doesn't necessarily make you smart.

Bull Flag Chart Pattern. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/flag-and-pennant.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! The flag is basically a rectangle, with two parallel trendlines. In the example above the trendlines are defined by three peaks and three low points. It is said that the “flag is flying at half mast”, with the sharp increase in price looking like the flagpole. This implies that the continuation signal will be followed by a price move similar in size to the prior one. Trading Tip – best traded when tightly built. Markets are Rigged. Using Charts and Technical Analysis alone is a road to the Poorhouse

03:42
Are the markets rigged? Is the stock market rigged? Why can't we use charts alone to analyse the markets? Andre Minassian, self-employed medium-term trader and businessman comments. You believe that all major stocks markets are fixed/rigged. Why and how can we use this to our advantage? When we just base ourselves on charts and fundamentals, the problem you have is that everybody else is looking at the same charts and fundamentals. The markets knows you as a trader by looking at charts so they know when retail traders are going to buy or sell.

Why can Most Traders Make $1000 but not $100,000? 🤑

09:11
Why most traders can make 1k but not 100k? http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/Making-a-living-spreads.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Why is it the case that many traders out there can make GBP1000 relatively easily but not a GBP100,000. The obvious reason is people's account size; if you're trading GBP1 pounds a point or GBP5 pounds a point or GBP10 pounts a point it is very hard to make 100k trading in small size. But there is something more fundamental about that and that is people focusing on the money instead of the process. We've mentioned this before - people keep focusing on the money - how much they've made or how much they are ahead but you need to shift the focus from the money to the process and that's how you go from making small amounts of money to larger amounts of money if you're starting with a small account. They don't think about how much they're making or how much they're losing - yes they calculate how much is at risk because they have to manage the risk but that's it. The majority of people are saying - that's my mortgage pay, that's a big tv...etc and they're anchoring their performance based on how much value that money is in the real world and that changes the psychology since in such cases people will want to take money off the table. People who focus solely on the process - are you sticking to your trading plan, are you managing the trade correctly?, do I need to add to the trade?..etc That's why people who trade in prop firms are able to scale up because once they've demonstrated their skill they are encouraged to trade in bigger size by trusting them with more monies. If you want to make more money on trade then obviously you have to increase your position size... My mistake was that I didn't always use stops sometimes. It is very painful seeing profits disappear and turning into losses. My current trading style is discretionary.

Will other CryptoCurrencies see the 10,000x gain like Bitcoin?

06:51
Will other CryptoCurrencies see the 10,000x gain like Bitcoin? PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Francis Hunt, stock market trader and educator comments. Besides Ethereum and Bitcoin, in which other cryptocurrencies should we consider investing? What are the most promising ones? So when we talk about when to buy, but when to sell? Is there any cryptocurrency apart from Bitcoin right now in which I can put in around $1k now with the possibility of a great return, say, of $10,000 in 5 years time? I would put my money on the first 10 and just keep an eye on the top 25. ICO's by their very nature are highly speculative and can be risky. You can now actually buy things with Bitcoin and that's practical. Ethereum is now also coming into practical things. On the bigger sums you probably don't want to put a lot of money on new unproven cryptocurrencies.

How to Use Bollinger Bands to Pinpoint Support and Resistance Levels

07:43
Discovering Bollinger Bands. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/bollinger-bands.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Bollinger Bands are a very useful tool invented by John Bollinger in the early 1980s. They give a frame of reference for where you expect the price to go. They are “adaptive” bands around the price chart, changing dynamically with volatility and thus providing much more information than bands at a set distance from the average price. The centreline is a moving average, and therefore nothing special. You can expect the price candles to be above the moving average in an uptrend and below the moving average in a downtrend, as inevitably the moving average is a lagging indicator, following behind the price movement. The bands are drawn at a constantly changing distance from the moving average, one band above and one below. The distance is conventionally taken at twice the standard deviation as this provides the most effective bands, though you can customize the indicator as you wish. It’s important to know that statistically using twice the standard deviation means that the price is between the upper band and the lower band 95% of the time. What this means in practice is that in an uptrend you can expect to see the price between the centreline and the upper band most of the time. In fact, if you study some charts you will see that the price tends to hug the upper line in an uptrend. Similarly, in a downtrend the price will tend to drag along the lower line. When the price does breakthrough the Bollinger band, it usually returns swiftly and therefore this would not be a place to make a trade. One way of trading on bands is to wait in an uptrend for the price to drop to the centerline, and then go long with the expectation that the price will go back up to the upper band. You can do the same thing in reverse on a downtrend. There are many other ways to use Bollinger bands, but one of the most interesting things to notice is what happens as the width of the bands expands and contracts. As stated, this is plotted using the standard deviation, and therefore it is a measure of the volatility of the stock. Many times you will see the bands pinching together, almost as if they are constraining the movement of the price, although of course it is actually the price’s lack of movement that reduces the size of the bands. Either way, when the bands have pinched right down it is common to see a strong move in the price, either up or down, almost as if it reaches a point where it cannot be constrained anymore. In this situation, it is important to note that the Bollinger bands really give you no indication which way the price will break out. Best Technical Indicator for Day Trading? 👊

07:41
What is the best indicator for day trading? PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Best indicator for intraday trading? Is it moving averages, stochastics, RSI...? This is my opinion of course and I will select just one indicator. For me it is the VWAP - volume weight average price. I think this is the best indicator for day trading. The VWAP is like a moving average but it is based on the volume traded. A regular moving average doesn't take into account the volume. But if there is more volume done at a specific price level we need to give it more weighting... Why is it the best indicator for day trading? On a trending day you are likely to get a trending VWAP... assuming a strong uptrend day as price starts to come down the very first touch (test) of the VWAP you will get a bounce. In other words it acts as support in an uptrend and the reason for this is that many algos are looking at this and this is considered a value area. I've made some good trades basing myself on this. Another way to use VWAP - if a market is swing trading the VWAP will look a bit like a straight line. What you can do is to market the distance between the high and the VWAP - very often if we are in a rotation environment we can do 75 pips to the downside... I don't know exactly why but I suspect its again these mean reversion algos. The Stochastic Indicator: When it Works, When it Doesn't & Why‎ - Part 1 📈

07:53
How to Use Stochastic Indicator. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/stochastics-indicator.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Stochastic Momentum Index indicator for Forex, stocks and E-minis First Look at the Stochastic Indicator. The stochastic momentum index (SMI) can indicate when a trend is strong (for entry points) and when a trend is weak (for exit points). This lesson looks at the stochastic indicator, which is another momentum indicator and oscillator. As a reminder, an oscillator has a theoretical range from 0% to 100%, but the action zones are above 70% or 80% and below 30% or 20%. Whether you take the more extreme values depends on the characteristics of the stock you are trading, and you need to look back over the chart to see what may work best. The stochastic oscillator works from calculations on where the closing price is in relation to the daily range. If the uptrend is strong, and therefore has momentum, the closing price will tend to be towards the upper end of the range, and vice versa. It can be very powerful, and 20 years ago was almost regarded as a holy grail by traders. As an oscillator, you can expect in a steady trend that it will go to an extreme value and stay there, so merely being at that value does not signal a trade. You may even choose to use the technique given in the last lesson on the RSI, and wait for a retracement in a strong uptrend to cause the oscillator to hit the lower value before considering a trade. One of the interesting features of the stochastic indicator is that there are two lines plotted below the chart. On a black-and-white chart the solid line, %K as it is called, is the actual oscillator line, and the dashed line, %D, is a signal line. The signal line is simply a three period moving average of %K, which means it has a smoother profile. If you’re using a colour chart, you will be able to set the colours that work best for you. As the name suggests, the signal line helps in determining when to enter and sometimes exit the trade. Just as the moving average crossover on a price chart can give you a signal, the signal line on the stochastic indicator can give you a trading signal. Simply look for it to cross the oscillator line when in an overbought or oversold area on its way back to the other end. The video gives several examples of this. There is a further refinement of the stochastic indicator. The particular indicator we have been talking about is called the Fast Stochastic. Some traders use what is called the Slow Stochastic, which takes the Fast Stochastic %D, calls it the new %K, and takes a further moving average to generate another %D. The Slow Stochastic smoothes out the variations further, which generally means it gives fewer later signals, but may reduce the number of false signals. As with all oscillators, it is important not to mechanically place a trade simply because of the position of the line. You need to assess the situation and determine, preferably using other methods, whether it is a likely trading situation. No one indicator can give you a reliable trading signal without considering other factors. Market is pulling back - is this a pullback that we need to be selling for a re-visiting or the lows or is it a reversal? If we get a key level of resistance and then price consolidates above that is an indication that sellers have had enough of it and buyers are willing to pay a little bit extra. What is a pullback really? When developing a trading strategy, do you give a higher priority to building entry signals, exit signals or money management rules? Do you favor any particular timeframe in your strategies? What is your average trade duration and trading frequency? What should an inexperienced trader watch when choosing a time frame? In terms of day to day strategy, it shouldn't really make a difference unless the market is very volatile. If you've got your methodology correct and you're trading with stop losses you shouldn't really be bothered.

Can you make a living out of trading?

06:09
Can you make a living out of this? http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/Making-a-living-spreads.html Daniel Moczulski of Star Financial Systems comments. How much money and time you need to do it professionally. I think you certainly can make a living out of trading and some do. I have to be blunt - when clients trade with us we see their trades; we do not see the amount of effort they put into those trades. Let me be clear on this. It is not easy and whenever I speak to profitable traders I can see they are absorbed by the financial markets and they put in a lot of effort. How much do the top spread bettors actually make? People view trading and spread betting in different ways. So the person who does it for a living might view winning 100k in a year as a good payout while a part-time trader would be happy for earning just 10k in a year. I always remember a particular winning 5 or 6 million pounds. How do losers think? How do winners manage risk? The clue is in the question there - and its the discipline - successful traders actually manage their risk. What kind of skills and character traits make a good trader? It is understand the risk/reward and profitable traders really do understand the relationship between fear and greed. Do short-term/day traders make more money than long-term traders? If they're good at it both make money. A short-term day trader has to really be glued to the screen and is far more involved in every trade he puts on. The long term trader doesn't operate like that and may not even look at it for the next 3 or 4 months. It also depends on the volatility of the market... What size accounts do the most profitable traders have? Are high net individuals more serious in their trading? This is a difficult question but good traders have accounts in excess of 2k definitely. When people open an account they tend to look at the minimum amount required to open an account but perhaps more important is the size of the trade you can put on.

How to use Ichimoku Cloud Indicator in Trading 🏯

09:47
Ichimoku trading indicator. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/technical-analysis.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE I will guide you on my research, my thoughts on it and how I think it should be used. This thing looks messy, however that's the point of it. Ichimoku is best used in trending environments; the idea is that if it looks horrible to your eyes then you simply discard it and not take the trade. However, if you look at it and it looks neat then its when you say; there is an opportunity there. The Ichimoku Cloud, aka Ichimoku Kinko Hyo is in reality a flexible indicator that defines support and resistance, identifies trend direction, measures momentum and ultimately provides trading signals. The basics of the Ichimoku strategy is that as price is above the cloud you are looking for buy signals and if the price is below the cloud you are looking for sell signals. You are looking for crossovers to the upside as you're trending. Personally I like the fact that it identifies the trends very visually.

Characteristics of Successful Traders

05:48
What kind of skills and character traits make up a good technical trader? Kamal Warren responds. What makes a good trader is a lot of practice, a lot of patience and you should treat trading and losses as a business. You have to treat wins respectfully and remain modest even after a string of good wins because it is when you start winning that you start doing things differently. What goes on in your mind plays a big part in whether you are a profitable trader or not. My biggest mistake tends to be opening trades early thinking that the technicals are going to confirm, another mistake for me is closing out positions too early.

How to Trade Trends and Build a Trend-Based Trading Strategy! 👊

08:17
Trend Trading: How to Build a Trend-Based Trading Strategy. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/academy/Spread-betting-trends.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE! Trading the Trend. How to build and trade a trend-following strategy and make money in the process. It makes sense to trade with a trend, in principle. It’s easy to see that the trend continues the current movement, and if you have a trade going then you will continue to make a profit. That’s why traders have the saying “Let the trend be your friend”. But it is not really as simple as seeing a price going up and deciding to get in on that trade. Trends don’t happen straight up, at least very rarely, as they have pullbacks or retracements which can take back some of the gain, or if you trade at the wrong time can hit your stoploss and take you out for a loss almost as soon as you get in. When you’re trading, it often works out better if you keep it very simple. Use simple indicators, don’t look for complicated patterns and features, use just as much complication as you need to determine what you need to know. In this case, you want to know that the trend is in place, which you get from a long moving average, and you want to avoid buying into the market when the price is stretched, as this is the place where you will probably see a pullback. One simple way to check on this is to set a couple of moving averages, say a five period and a twenty period. When they move further away from each other, that is a sign that the market is getting stretched and you have to be careful about entering the market at this time. Some people worry about missing out on a trend, and therefore potentially losing out on profit. You need to take a longer view than that. There’ll always be another trend coming along and you don’t want to trade on something which does not have a good chance of success. The traders’ saying that encapsulates this is “Don’t chase a trend”. On balance, it’s just not worth it to take more risk then you need to. Of course, trends do sometimes stop or even reverse. Usually there’s a reason for this, even though you may not know it or be able to find it out. But Newton’s law of motion, “a body in motion continues in motion unless acted upon by an external force”, also seems to apply to the price movement in a trading chart. With a strong trend, it is fair to assume that it will continue until you see some hesitation in the market forces. So in summary, to keep it simple, you identify a strong trend by taking a long term moving average, say an SMA(200), reinforce this opinion by looking at the SMA(50) or SMA(20) midrange average, and wait for the right time. You can determine the right time by various indicators that we have covered before, or simply look at the SMA(5), see when it pulls back to be close to or crossing the SMA(20), and judge it is the right time to get on the trade before the trend powers back up. 50 pips a day forex trading strategy. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/technical-analysis.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE This forex day trading strategy is all about making 50 pips a day - okay this is not guaranteed in real life but its very systematic; its either making 50 pips or nothing. The theory behind this trading strategy is as follows. We have money flowing round the world with the currency markets 7 days a week; we get the London session, the European, USA session and the Asian session and then they start all over again. The theory of this system is that as any of these sessions open we trade the currency pair that is dominant; so for the London session open we trade the GBP/USD and when the Asian session opens we trade the USD/JPY..etc Its a bit ambigous sometimes what the time of the open is. In this strategy we take the first hour's range of whichever market we're looking at. The theory is I go long when I break above and go short when I break below. This is a very systematic strategy that has potential.

GBPUSD 4 hour swing trading strategy. http://www.financial-spread-betting.com/course/technical-analysis.html PLEASE LIKE AND SHARE THIS VIDEO SO WE CAN DO MORE This strategy is used on GBP/USD only and is a 4 hour strategy. I have 3 exponential moving averages - I have a yellow 50 period, a red 14 period and I also have a shorter 4 period cyan/blue ema. I also have stochastics setup 13(K), 5(D) and 5 (Smooth). The stochastics acts as an initial filter so you go to the daily timeframe and you have to make sure that your per cent K (blue line) is below is the per cent D for a short position (or above it for longs) so you're not going against the broader trend on the daily chart. Once you have that you don't need the stochastics any longer. The next premise of the setup is to take the fastest moving average (in this case 4) - when the blue crosses the 50 (yellow) and then the 14 period red ema crosses as well then we go short. The stop loss is 50 pips and the target is a 150 pips. Of course you can adjust this setup to suit your strategy - this is a framework to build upon.
