Bitcoin Q&A: How long until mainstream adoption?

05:58
How long until mainstream adoption? Previous revolutions in money. In the mid 90s, you still couldn't pay with a credit card in many places. I predict it will take 15-20 years for mainstream adoption of Bitcoin. We are in a race because governments around the world are trying to ban cash and force us to adopt a different sort of digital currency with complete surveillance, where they can flip and switch and you will no longer exist as a person if you doing anything they consider radical. Adoption patterns and the Gini coefficient. The ownership of Bitcoin is not as diverse as it should be, primarily because of the way it grew. But people who got in early and took the risk have been enormously rewarded; no one's coming to bail out Bitcoin. Bitcoin Q&A: Hot vs. cold wallets

04:59
The dangers of custodial accounts; not your keys, not your money. Security practices for long-term vs. short-term storage, trading, and transacting. I don't leave any currency (crypto or fiat) in an exchange for longer than 15 minutes. I use these cryptocurrencies to pay my bills, so I transact very often. So far, I've only ever lost small amounts of bitcoin through stupid mistakes. 1. Don't leave your money on exchanges longer than you have to. If you day-trade, make sure you understand the risk that entails. 2. Organise a tiered storage system of hot and cold wallets, factoring in the amount of bitcoin you're storing, how you plan to use it (soon or not for a long time), and what security risks you're willing to take with each tier. 3. Use cold storage (i.e. paper wallets) for large amounts or for bitcoins you don't plan on using for a longer period of time. 4. Use hardware wallets that are PIN or password-protected 5. Use multi-signature multi-party or multi-factor wallets for carrying out your weekly business transactions. 6. Use hot wallets (ex. mobile wallets) for petty cash, or if you are the Oprah of cryptocurrency. Bitcoin Q&A: My response to Jamie Dimon

03:28
My response to Jamie Dimon's criticism of Bitcoin as a "fraud." Jamie doth protest too much methinks, because JPMorgan Chase was fined for mortgage fraud. The world's banks have never faced competition from the internet; the internet is now coming for banking. Industry leaders are going through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Bitcoin Q&A: The 21 million supply cap

05:12
What determines the supply of bitcoin? A probabilistic, geometrically declining supply function meant to simulate the issuance of precious metals. Every ten minutes, new bitcoin are created. Every four years, the block reward cuts in half in what is known as "the Halvening." Will the supply cap at 21 million bitcoins cause problems for adoption? If there is demand, the bitcoin already issued will circulate in the market and create velocity in the economy. We will see different monetary policies for other cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is unequally distributed and it may make a new 1%, but it may also make you part of the new 0%. The fundamental difference is that the new Bitcoin 1% got there through being rewarded for taking risks on a new and relatively untested currency, whereas the traditional 1% got there because their grandfather killed more people than my grandfather. Bitcoin Q&A: Bitcoin vs. blockchain

04:27
What is the difference between Bitcoin and "blockchain"? Blockchains are only one of the foundational technologies. In an attempt to co-opt the interest around Bitcoin, companies and governments are trying to circle the square by creating centralised and permissioned versions while entirely missing the point: decentralization. This is part of a talk which took place at Pebble Beach for the Capgemini CXO Forum on November 1-3rd 2017 in Monterey, California. Bitcoin Q&A: How much bitcoin do you have?

03:23
How much bitcoin do you have? What percentage of our wealth should be in bitcoins? A percentage that reflects your understanding of how the technology works and your ability to absorb the risk that it entails. However it also depends on what country you're in, because the volatility and risk in bitcoin may be better than your national currency. This is not a recommendation to invest; I have dedicated to career and my passion, I could lose all of it and still have everything else. Invest in education instead of speculation. Note: Yes, I know - this video is now out of date. The advice about risk tolerance and focusing on education still stands. Bitcoin Q&A: What is the role of nodes?

08:17
The role that full nodes play in security of the network. People focus a lot on mining, which has a fundamental role in the network but is not necessarily the most interesting feature of the constellation of technologies involved. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) is the most essential protocol underlying the world's routing system, and you use it every single day without knowing it, just as you are oblivious to the vast filtration system allowing you to drink clean water from a fountain. A node is a computer that is participating the global peer-to-peer Bitcoin network. They propagate transactions and blocks everywhere. Full nodes act independently as authoritative verifiers. Onion routing. Double-spending protection. Levels of isolation for untrustworthy nodes. Why would you run one? To be in control of your money - your keys, your money. You don't trust anyone else to tell you what the truth is, you cross-check every claim yourself. Be part of the revolution in money. Bitcoin Q&A: Will governments ban cryptocurrencies?

07:36
Will governments or international government organisations implement their own centralised cryptocurrencies and ban the mining or ownership of open decentralised ones like Bitcoin? If your government is against freedom of association, expression, commerce, innovation, job creation, is it a democracy? Are you free? You must resist, not only through your choices about which governments get elected but about using alternative systems. People in places like Venezuela are making that choice every day, breaking the law to feed their family. This is a much bigger issue than Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin Q&A: How do I choose a wallet?

04:03
How do I choose a cryptocurrency wallet? Every wallet has different features, transaction customization, fee estimation, levels of security and privacy, and affiliations. The criteria for wallets is different depending on the person, their needs, and risk model. Wallets that used to be good may no longer be good or share the same principles. You don't have to use one wallet forever. Use many different wallets for different purposes and feel free to change them often. One of the criteria I use for wallets is that if it doesn't support SegWit, I don't use it, because I want the fee discounts. NOTE: This talk was recorded prior to the cancellation of 2X. A couple mobile wallets like EdgeSecure beta (formerly Airbitz), GreenAddress, and Samourai now support SegWit. Bitcoin Q&A: What happens to our bitcoins during a hard fork?

05:04
What do we do with our bitcoins during a hard fork? Where do we store them? Are they safe? A hard fork (planned, accidental, or as a network-based attack) is "a permanent divergence from the previous version of the blockchain, and nodes running previous versions will no longer be accepted by the newest version." Hard forks in Bitcoin have so far not happened often or on a planned basis, because they have monetary consequences. If a hard fork does happen, your keys will control value (i.e. coins) on both chains because they have the same ancestry. It does mean you have "twice as many coins," but not in the way you think -- more than likely, they will be worth half as much or less. Ponzi schemes and inflation. Bitcoin is designed to be a resilient, self-healing, anti-fragile system, especially when it is being attacked all the time. If you directly control the private keys to your bitcoins, you're fine --- your coins aren't being invalidated or going anywhere. When the hard fork happens, you can just decide which chain you want to continue with. Wait until things clarify. If you don't control the private keys to your bitcoins (ex. on an exchange), move them to address that you control. If you don't, whoever controls your bitcoins will be deciding for you, and not all exchanges/ wallets will be supporting both sides of the fork. Bitcoin Q&A: Reflections on the last five years

07:12
What is the most significant thing you've changed your mind on with respect to cryptocurrencies in the last five years? Making predictions with certainty in a new and fast-paced industry; under-estimating the resilience of Bitcoin; the social attack / argument surface. If you were to make one change to Bitcoin, what would it be? I would like to see more implementations of privacy features, which is already happening. However, no one person gets to make changes to Bitcoin. There is not much else I would change in the original design; I think it would be hubris even for me to say I can do it better. There has been a "next Bitcoin" that fixed supposed fatal flaws ever year since the beginning of Bitcoin, but none have superseded its design choices aimed at security, censorship resistance, and decentralisation. (And no, market capitalisation is not a great measurement for comparison.) This is a question from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on February 24th 2018. Bitcoin Q&A: Migrating to post-quantum cryptography

06:47
Keywords/phrases: Quantum cryptography, quantum cryptoanalysis, quantum computing. Bitcoin uses SHA-256. In cryptography there is a 20-30 year lifecycle for an algorithm before it gets exceeded by new technologies and developments in mathematics. Both the signing and hashing algorithms can be upgraded in Bitcoin if there is a need to do that. Quantum cryptography represents a threat only if unevenly distributed in commercial sectors. If it is available to only one actor, and not all actors, they are unlikely to use it against Bitcoin; instead they're going to keep it secret and use it when they're threatened by ex. cryptographically secure nuclear weapons. Intelligence agencies who have that kind of significant computing advantage don't use it until there is a dire emergency, because once you use it everyone will know you have it. After that all the algorithms get changed, so you better make it good. If it is widely available, all the miners update to quantum computers and we're going to be looking at several orders of magnitude in improvement, because running one is neither free nor easy. We don't know what the economics will be yet, but we will solve problems when it's necessary. Corporations and governments are not going to be happy with Bitcoin. Kings were not happy and yet the revolution happened anyway. Bitcoin is a global and technological revolution. They have adapted to new technologies for hundreds of years. The fact that they won't be happy doesn't concern me, because Bitcoin is a system that doesn't require their permission, approval, or cooperation. They can pretend it's going away but it isn't. We can talk all day about whether the government should or shouldn't regulate Bitcoin, but the real question is whether they can. They can regulate at the edge, the behaviour of users, but they can't regulate Bitcoin itself. Bitcoin is exciting because it introduces a new choice; it's not saying you can't do the old way (hierarchical central banking, border-restricted jurisdictions for currencies ), it's saying we can also do this.

Ethereum Q&A: ICOs and pyramid schemes

09:26
How do we make people more resistant to ponzi & pyramid schemes? Does regulation stop them? Is the added attention a risk for the rest of the cryptocurrency space? As long as you don't make the mistake of stealing from the rich, regulators are not very effective at stopping scams. Scams and schemes happen in both thoroughly regulated and unregulated markets. Most of what regulators do involves restricting entrants on both sides of the market, and by consequence limiting liquidity. They will continue to happen. Most investors will have to have to experience losing money (perhaps repeatedly) in order to learn. It's very hard to just tell them, to convince someone who's making returns they've never seen in their life that they are participating in a scam which will inevitably collapse. What you definitely don't want to do is tell investors that if they outsource decision-making and risks, they will get bailed out; that will only make them stupider. Correction: At 0:40, I mentioned a "George Ponzi. I meant to refer to Charles (aka Carlo) Ponzi. Bitcoin Q&A: Lightning and onion routing

10:14
How will Lightning Network(s) improve scalability and privacy in Bitcoin? What is the Basis of Lightning Technology (BOLT) interoperability standard? How many implementations are there? Onion-routed, anonymous payments payments. Are there centralisation risks? Note: In this video I said, "There is also a company called Lightning Network", but I misspoke. The company name is "Lightning Labs". As I explained, the Lightning Network is an open protocol, like Bitcoin, and is a collaboration between 6 teams & companies producing open source software to a common specification. lnd (Lightning Labs), c-lightning (Blockstream), eclair (ACINQ): https://github.com/lightningnetwork/lightning-rfc/blob/master/00-introduction.md https://github.com/ElementsProject/lightning https://github.com/ACINQ/eclair Integration tests: https://cdecker.github.io/lightning-integration/ This was part of the first monthly live Patreon Q&A session on November 27th, 2017. Introduction to the Internet of Money

18:19
In this talk, Andreas explains why Bitcoin and open public blockchains are going to transform not only the world of finance, but the internet itself. Even though it has been termed "the internet of money," people are beginning to realise that this is something more than just money, and certainly more than what they're being told. This talk took place at the Internet Days ("Internetdagarna") conference during November 20-21st 2017 at the Waterfront Congress Centre in Stockholm, Sweden: https://antonopoulos.com/event/the-internet-days-stockholm-sweden/ QUESTION & ANSWER: Where can I buy and spend bitcoin? - https://youtu.be/RPR5dtmXnY8 What is mining? - https://youtu.be/t4p4iMqmxbQ RELATED: Introduction to Bitcoin - https://youtu.be/l1si5ZWLgy0 The Stories We Tell About Money - https://youtu.be/ONvg9SbauMg Money as a System-of-Control - https://youtu.be/FyK4P7ZdOK8 Delivering Liberty, At Scale - https://youtu.be/AecPrwqjbGw Bitcoin: Where the Laws of Mathematics Prevail - https://youtu.be/HaJ1hvon0E0 Decentralization and the Architecture of Trust - https://youtu.be/wSRN8PUhHX0 Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Net Neutrality and open blockchains

Bitcoin Q&A: HODLing and the "get free" scheme

04:20
Bitcoin as a long term store-of-value (SoV) versus an investment yielding returns. Lightning Network as a way for full node operators to earn fees. Bitcoin is not a get-rich-quick scheme, it is a get-free scheme - don't get rich, get free. Bitcoin Q&A: Decentralised exchanges and counterparty risk

07:03
How will markets transition from centralised exchanges to decentralised exchanges (LocalBitcoins, cash ATMs, Bisq, cross-chain atomic swaps)? Could fiat-pegged cryptocurrencies ease the process of fiat-to-crypto exchanges? How could the counterparty risk introduced by custodial parties like Tether affect the security of Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency ecosystem at large? The first question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on November 27th 2017. The second question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on January 27th 2018. Bitcoin Q&A: Where can I buy and spend bitcoin?

04:13
How do bitcoin ATMs work? How easy is it to spend bitcoin? Some will allow you to transfer both ones, but ATMs in most countries are often one-way "vending machines." Circulating bitcoin helps grow the economy. I get paid in bitcoin and I pay others in bitcoin. There are many things you can buy with bitcoin, including flights, hotels, and products on Amazon. Bitcoin is first and foremost the currency of the internet. Bitcoin Q&A: The Lightning Network & Rootstock

03:25
Keywords/phrases: The Lightning Network is an overlay layer-two network which uses actual bitcoin transactions to create promises that can be redeemed/ settled on the Bitcoin network in the future, or extended forward in time across multiple participants. This allows you to encompass a much larger volume of transactions, much more fine-grained in time and amount. You can do millions of participants, millions of transactions, milliseconds apart, for a few satoshis and still make it work by only settling the final reconciliation. It is Bitcoin - Layer 2, or the second layer of any other blockchain that supports the basic multi-signature, timelock transactions, and some basic scripting capabilities. It adds a dimension of processing that will blow away everything we've seen before. Imagine streaming your salary not every two weeks but every minute, because why not get paid incrementally every minute? Streaming money is the new concept. Rootstock is an attempt to implement an Ethereum virtual machine on top of Bitcoin. It hasn't been implemented yet partly because it depends on a couple of underlying technologies like Segregated Witness and it needs some new scripting opcodes as well as the ability to soft-fork upgrade some of the scripting language. Bitcoin Q&A: Regulation and the bank boycott

08:19
In 2014, you told the Canadian Senate to hold off on regulating cryptocurrencies for five years. What would you say to them now and do you see any new restrictions or regulations regarding bitcoin coming in the next 6 months? How would the Cryptocurrency Tax Fairness Act (HR-3708) affect capital gains reporting? Most regulations in the next six months will probably focus on ICOs and whether they fall under securities law. Custodial services which hold money on behalf of others may also face more scrutiny on a state-by-state basis in the United States. I don't believe in KYC/AML regulations. More and more interactions will move to decentralised exchanges; destroying the on- and off-ramps will just encourage people to stay in the cryptocurrency economy. Boycotting a technology or industry that is rapidly evolving is not a good idea. https://coincenter.org/link/the-cryptocurrency-tax-fairness-act-was-offered-as-amendment-to-the-house-tax-reform-bill-last-night-in-congress My testimony to the Canadian Senate: https://youtu.be/GP_eT6E4os8 The first question is from the patron-only live Q&A which took place on November 27th 2017. Bitcoin Q&A: Price premiums and arbitrage

07:04
How do we handle geographical arbitrage? Demonetisation and bitcoin price premiums in India. Arbitrage is the process of diminishing the difference in price in open markets. If differences in price emerge, they can be exploited for profit until the difference goes to zero. The problem is not bitcoin, the problem is currency controls. Bitcoin has no location as a global network, it was "in the US" to start with or "in India" to end with. What arbitrage activity tells you is not that bitcoin is worth $1200 here, but that rupees are discounted 20% against hard assets, including other national currencies. The market is sending you a signal. A currency that cannot move across borders is worth less. Bitcoin Q&A: Could governments take over exchanges?

06:11
What prevents governments from taking control of exchanges, just as they have seized gold in the past? They can take over centralised exchanges, but a significant number of people do not store their bitcoins on exchanges long-term (your keys, your money), so that would not enable them to control the network. They may come after people who they can see have bought bitcoin from exchanges, but that will just drive the entire economy underground. Rather than simply buying bitcoin with your bank account, you will have to barter or offer services and be paid in bitcoin. Anywhere that bitcoin is banned, the spread will increase. Premium prices and smuggling. Until the levels are equalized, the more it will continue to flow into a giant underground market. Foreign currency controls. Russian history. Bribery and corruption. Venezuela and India examples of Gresham's law. DEA agents stealing bitcoin from the Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht case. Making a mockery of the law. If breaking the law is the difference between feeding your kids or watching them starve, no one gives a damn about the law and nothing will stop them. Let them go after the exchanges, because they're going to create exactly the premium that's going to drive an enormous black market. "Black market" is just another word for 'unofficial' market. Bitcoin Q&A: Wealth distribution statistics

05:44
What are your thoughts on wealth distribution / concentration in Bitcoin? Addresses are not people! The majority of addresses are used anonymously / pseudo-anonymously, so clustering is very difficult. Exchanges or payment processors may be holding the funds of hundreds of thousands of people in only a few addresses; at the same time, a single person could be controlling thousands of addresses with very small amounts, or a single address may be a multi-sig that is controlled by more than one person. Cryptocurrencies in general do have poor Gini coefficients (i.e. unequal distribution) when compared to society as a whole, especially because we are still in the very early stages of adoption. However there is no sound evidence to support most of the internal wealth distribution statistics being published in the media. The implications of large numbers of bitcoin being held in very few addresses has greater implications for the storage security of custodians -- and the risk of an expensive hack -- than it does for wealth distribution. Bitcoin Q&A: Why developers are leaving banks

03:59
Banks are investing hundreds of millions of dollars in the blockchain ecosystem, training tens of thousands of developers to build things that won't work. The future role of banks in the economy. Horse carriages in Central Park did not completely disappear because of cars. They will be used for legacy applications. "Centralised blockchains" are a contradiction in terms because the purpose of a blockchain is to allow for/ increase decentralisation. Banking as an institution is obsolete; it may take 20-30 years before you see that ripple through the world, but it will. I'm hoping the best of the best of these developers take a couple of years getting bored doing proof-of-concept on reinventing spreadsheets, and then use their Christmas bonus to fund a start-up that will compete against their former employer who taught them how to do this. I've talked to people from these banks who've done this. Competition will determine the outcome in the market, and if you continue to build horse buggies in the age of the automobile, you go out of business. The dinosaurs will survive but they will change and lose enough power until they become chickens. That's what happened to the dinosaurs, and we have their children for breakfast every morning. Bitcoin Q&A: We all started as critics

04:30
Since you've encountered numerous critics of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies, who are the most well-reasoned and worthy of engagement? People who are intellectually honest and express a genuine desire to understand this technology. The most vocal supporters in Bitcoin usually started off as critics who were initially dismissive of it. Even Satoshi didn't know if it would work, and people who followed Satoshi told him / her / them that it wouldn't work. The technological flaws that critics usually fixate on are temporary issues (ex. fees, usability, price volatility) and not inherent problems in this dynamic evolving, competing ecosystem of designs. More often they will criticise it because it seems politically or even morally inconsistent with their worldview and they fear the implications. "This can't be!" And yet it is. "But you shouldn't!" And yet we did. Now what do we do about it? This is part of a talk which took place at the Bitcoin Open Blockchain (BOB) community event on October 29th 2017 at the mHUB innovation center in Chicago, Illinois: https://www.meetup.com/Bitcoin-Open-Blockchain-Community-Chicago/events/244248063/ Watch the full talk here: https://youtu.be/XCVaabu3J04 RELATED: The Currency Wars and Bitcoin's Neutrality - https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 Worse than Useless: Financial Surveillance - https://youtu.be/n4F-h4xuXMk The war on cash and crypto - https://youtu.be/BAlRKfvBnvw Fake News, Fake Money - https://youtu.be/i_wOEL6dprg The Stories We Tell About Money - https://youtu.be/ONvg9SbauMg Banks vs. Bitcoin: The Five Stages of Grief - https://youtu.be/43Ucj6_Erb0 When will the scare stories stop? - https://youtu.be/yhKIKB6cn6w My response to Jamie Dimon - https://youtu.be/1dEcdGc0tIo Inspiring cryptocurrency projects - https://youtu.be/WW8norCKUbE Remittances and smuggling in Venezuela - https://youtu.be/RRXecXfWARw Can cryptocurrencies support terrorism? - https://youtu.be/Ryz-pXbsojU The separation of money and state - https://youtu.be/jGmtRA9S7_Y A voluntary alternative to mandatory currencies - https://youtu.be/5ogv3Eya9nQ Fungibility, privacy, anonymity - https://youtu.be/y3s8c7YDtXU Who determines the value of bitcoin? - https://youtu.be/DucvYCX1CVI Price volatility, pegging, stability - https://youtu.be/9KPyflyHP6s Scaling complex systems - https://youtu.be/dm9m1oQr6Ks Scaling, trust, and trade-offs - https://youtu.be/vCxmHwqyJWU Altcoins and the scaling debate - https://youtu.be/slbpdW-H3yk Is Bitcoin a democracy? - https://youtu.be/TC3Hq76UT5g HODLing and the "get free" scheme - https://youtu.be/MhOwmsW1YNI Andreas M. Bitcoin Q&A: Decentralised exchanges with fiat

07:03
What is the future of decentralised exchanges? Is it possible to have them with fiat gateways? Many of the same mechanisms (ex. multisignature, timelocks) that allow the Lightning Network and payment channels to function will also be useful in building decentralised exchanges such as Bisq (https://bisq.network/). Except for cash, there is always a certain degree of risk when exchanging for fiat, because they use centralised systems and transactions can be reversed. Bitcoin Q&A: Intrinsic vs. extrinsic assets

05:06
Are blockchains useful for supply chain transparency, disintermediation, and integrity control? To some extent, but there is a big difference between models that use intrinsic, native assets vs. extrinsic assets. The latter is currently very difficult to do in a decentralized way or without reintroducing counter-party risk. You need to think about this problem not only as a technologist but from the perspective of each of the human components involved. Sometimes the more you try to apply technical solutions, the easier it is for that system to be gamed by human ingenuity. Money as a System-of-Control

17:12
We know that money serves as: - A Store of Value (SoV) - A Medium of Exchange (MoE) and - A Unit of Account (UoA) But what happens when a fourth use of money is introduced, one which subordinates all the other characteristics: money as a system of control. Bitcoin Q&A: What is the biggest adoption hurdle?

03:13
The biggest technical hurdle to Bitcoin adoption. User interfaces, generational change, understanding how money and specifically network-based currency works. Some people will never be comfortable with this form of money, but for many people under 30 who belong to an online connected society, doing money on the internet seems obvious. In some places, Bitcoin is being adopted quite rapidly, protecting their savings against crises. The Internet of Money: Five Years Later

39:19
In this talk, Andreas reflects on all the exhilarating and terrifying moments of the last five years in Bitcoin, especially the price bubble of 2017. But he also reminds people who have come for the price that they should stay for the principles. This keynote talk happened during the epic one-night only extravaganza at the historic Music Box Theater in Chicago on April 25th, 2018. The main event, emceed by Pamela Morgan, was a live recording of the 5-year anniversary episode of the Let’s Talk Bitcoin Podcast. All four hosts Adam B. Levine, Stephanie Murphy, Jonathan Mohan, and Andreas M. Antonopoulos were together on-stage for the first time ever. The hour-long episode included the hosts discussing some of their favorite memories over the past five years, what’s happening now, and of course, they encouraged some audience participation. The show was recorded and made available as a podcast on the LTB network. Bitcoin Q&A: How is fungibility tied to privacy?

07:34
Fungibility is simply that it doesn't matter where any given unit of currency came from; one unit is worth as much as any other unit. For example, it doesn't matter, upon presentation, the euro you hold was stolen two transactions ago. No one can say "I will take that euro but not that euro." This was settled as a matter of law in the 16th century. The reason we have fungibility is because otherwise the currency wouldn't work; if every time you received a euro, you had to open a database and check the provenance, currency wouldn't work. Not just because you would have to track a database that was perfect and always updated, but because no euro would be worth one euro. Every euro would be weighted by how liquid it is, whether you can use it and it will be accepted. Fungibility is understanding by law, practice, and technology that every unit is treated as indistinguishable. Bitcoin is somewhat fungible. You can trace the provenance of every coin; by custom we don't do that but we are beginning to see some companies do it, which is a problem. If accounts start being frozen because of where bitcoins came from three transactions ago, that's a problem. Fungibility is tied to privacy and anonymity. There are systems being made where you can't tell the amount being transacted, who the sender and receiver are. Banning technology, especially open-source technology, because criminals use it only usually affects the people who aren't criminals: the innocent and the idiots. People should be able to protect their money from predators, from corporations, from tyrannical governments. Bitcoin Q&A: What is mining?

03:11
What is mining? Does it work as a business model? Mining - particularly regarding proof-of-work cryptocurrencies like bitcoin - provides industrial infrastructure via special purpose, high performance computing with application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) to ensure security of the network. But the media don't describe it like that, because talking about the "dark web" gets more clicks and sells newspapers. The early internet was also described as an obscure technology only for geeks and criminals. People are afraid of change and we're still in the early days of cryptocurrencies. Ethereum Q&A: Initial coin offerings (ICOs)

07:15
What are your thoughts on initial coin offerings (ICOs)? Are there any you are interested in? In the future, the possibility of funding new initiatives and creating ventures on a global basis without the traditional limitations, is going to open up new opportunities for companies. However, investors will first have to swim in waters infested with unscrupulous people and their Ponzi scheme shitcoins. The primary purpose of an ICO should be to fund a worthwhile product or project that is already achieving success, not to "generate value" or "take growth to the next level." I'm sure there are some that are very interesting, but at least 95% of the ICOs out there have none / very few of the basic fundamentals. Does that mean we should have a regulatory agency decide which ones are good or bad? No. It will require more maturity among investors in identifying Ponzis. The best way to learn which ICOs are worth it is to lose money. Waiting for the wash-out. When these people promise great riches, they usually mean for themselves. If you have a viable product... build it first and they will come! I do not treat these technologies as investments but learning opportunities. Bitcoin Q&A: The internet will eat your business

Performance issues are an engineering optimisation task. The history the Internet swallowing industries. Lightning Network outpacing innovation of VISA. Don't hire a blockchain consultant -- ask people from the music, movie, or phone industry when they realised the Internet was going to eat their business, what they did to try to stop it, and what they would do differently now. Bitcoin Q&A: Global financial crisis (GFC)

04:43
The coming global financial crisis (GFC). What will happen in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies? Some people are a bit gleeful about the idea of a global financial crisis, that it will "send bitcoin to the moon." Beware what you wish for. Small-scale regional crises could show people why alternative systems (to protect against inflation and currency controls, for refugees to send money home, etc) are better and give them an opportunity to escape. Remember that such events would cause investment to dry up. During the crisis in Greece, people didn't flock to buy gold or bitcoin, because they didn't have any money in the bank! They took out their paychecks as fast as they could and tried to make it until next week. Ugly, sudden, painful crises kill, imprison, and persecute a lot of people. Gradual, non-violent transitions to superior systems are obviously preferred. The way to achieve success is through informed choice, not desperation. You're all here because you chose to be, and that's how we'd like to keep it. Bitcoin Q&A: What is the biggest threat?

02:09
The biggest threats to Bitcoin. Bitcoin is not just a technology, it is also a community - which is vulnerable to injections of disinformation and drama. Every activist network eventually gets infiltrated and filled with propaganda by either idiots or people who are paid to do this as a job (Reddit, I'm talking about you). My advice is to focus on the technology, which is real. Community fragmentation slows things down. If the brightest programmers are spending their days dealing with trolls, they're not writing code, and that's a danger. This talk took place on December 6th, 2016, at the Bitcoin Cologne meetup in Köln, Germany: https://www.meetup.com/Bitcoin-Cologne/events/232687726/ RELATED: The Currency Wars and Bitcoin's Neutrality - https://youtu.be/Bu5Mtvy97-4 Someone said "Bitcoin is dead."
